About Me
Jed Yoong is an independent journalist. She believes race is an artificial concept propagated to control the people. Everyone is a child of God, and it’s up to us to see the divine in each other. Since an early age, she has been fascinated by politics, probably due to an over-exposure to James Bond flicks and other Cold War movies. After hopping off to Singapore, courtesy of the Singaporean government, to do her A-levels in Victoria Junior College, she flew to the United Kingdom to pursue her Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Accounting & Finance at Warwick University and “see more of the world”. In 2002, she came home to experience Malaysia as an adult, started writing and was seriously considering migration. But after the amazing 2008 General Election results, she has decided to stay. Hallelujah!

Ha ha.. barely 3 days you already decided to stay? Look, politic is something that you will learn more after age.
In 1999, thanks to Dr M for his leadership in managing the financial crisis, I voted for him despite I was actually not happy about Renong and UEM. But, came to 2004, I was getting fed up with Dr M (especially his policy in Proton, MAS, and big mouth over Jews… etc). So, luckily Dr M stepped down and Abdullah took over, like so many Malaysians, I gave him the support to get 91% of the vote. The 4 years - is history now and you should know.
Many people casted protest vote in 2008 especially those middle classses in urban areas who are unhappy about living standards, crime rates, UMNO racist remark… DAP and PKR (or so-called Anwar effect) were actually not the motives or reasons for us to do so. I did not attend any single DAP or PKR ceramah. I just tell everyone around me: DON’T VOTE FOR BN.
Many of us were surprised by the result. We actually wanted to slap MCA/Gerakan to wake them up. But, many of us found that so many slaps create serious casualty to them and we are wondering now what will happen. When we learnt that DAP Penang actually asked Jeff Ooi to meet the MNC and SME representatives, we were stunned. Alamak, DAP Penang does not any talent from the team to handle? Why a Jelutong MP has to do the State Exco’s job? Then, the next move, waive the parking fines? What? Is this the most important thing to do? How much is the fine for parking offence? I only paid RM 30 in KL and I believe it should be much cheaper in Penang.. And, what kind of message is this? Does it mean under DAP rules, you can simply park your car or refuse to pay the parking? Sigh, what a joke..
So, hold on for a while, you will find that Politics suck… it is the same anywhere in the earth, be it in Malaysia or US or Taiwan or Australia. You stay in Malaysia because your relatives, friends and the people you love are all here.
HA HA HA HA. Maybe ‘cos I discovered “handsome” Husam to photograph and beautiful Kelantan. KL life is erm, very urban….
Haha, that is the truth.
Ya, KL is urban and people’s thinking are different. Why BN lost 10 of 11 seats in KL? Because their policies or propaganda are no longer relevant to us. They put big advertisement about RM5 for medical… well, even my Malay friends in KL don’t go to Government hospitals. We either got company to pay or claim insurance for treatments in private hospitals. To us: high living expense + high crime rate are the main reasons we want to punish BN.
My brothers and sisters in Penang voted against BN for other reasons: racist remark + indecisiveness to fix a CM (seem that UMNO is manipulating) + high living expenses. We had been complaining about prices for milk powders, milo,… None of the my family members in Penang went for any ceramah. We were wondering why people keep on saying “Anwar” or DAP strategies… What Gerakan grassroot said were true. People already made their decisions even before the campaign started. People did not want to talk and did not want to listen. They already made up their mind - punish BN.
When we read all these post-mortem reports or analysis from the so-called “experts” or academic, and they suggested new era as Malaysia is moving away from ethnic or race-based politics, we all said, “Ai yoh, where got so complicated?”…Frankly, expert always look thing from their angles.. That’s why BN lost so badly because they rely on their own experts for wrong intelligence. Even before the voting day, everyone said BN would still maintain 2/3. But, people like us that walk on the street, we want to punish BN (causing massive traffic jams just a few HINDRAF people want to demo.. were these necessary?)
So, election in 2008 is just a surprise to everyone … everyone in BN, DAP, PKR and voters themselves. Many voters in Penang are now wondering what will happen next 5 years. Abdullah probably never consulted some Chinese Fengshui masters (like Joey Yap or Lilian Too)..
..whatever you’re smoking - pass it around..for a round of celebration.
Ha ha ha. I smoke legal stuff. Ha ha ha. Unless I am in Thailand…Ha ha ha.
I agree with kloss2. Four to five years from now, the political feel will probably be a lot different that what it is today. A clear example is the vastly different election results between 2004 and 2008.
I’m not propagating people to emigrate but it’s a good ‘back door’ if you feel you just can’t bear to stay in Malaysia anymore for whatever reasons in the coming years.
Make and Live the best out of life whereever you are. There is no “perfect place” in this world. Not everyone is a child of God if you know what I mean. Are the two dots indelibly imprinted onto your left hand??
Everyone is a child of God. But they may not act that way.
No-lah. Those are from my Flickr outing.
God exist in ones mind if one believes in god but… then again the concept of god is a severe crutch on ones mindset as well. Belief in god has caused so much division amongst mankind in our history and the ultimate truth is ….no one really know the origin of mankind.
Hello Jed,
God loves every race.
More than that, He loves the poor. Abraham Lincoln once said, ‘God must love the poor. Why else would he have made so many of them?’
Many have a choice to leave but many also don’t have a choice to leave.
I am glad you have decided to stay. Who knows, one day, we shall see a transformed Malaysia - justice for every race and the poor. Amen.
I was very disappointed with Malaysia. Along with lots of friends who’ve settled abroad. I came home ‘cos of my granny. But she is gone. So I’m in a way free and wanted to go ‘cos NEP is bad for wrong skin colour.
Then I found Kelantan! Ha ha ha. What a paradise. Suits me.
Hi Jed,
Now PKR has proposed the MEA to replace the NEP..What is the real meaning of MEA… How will MEA be implemented …we will see. Glad that you decided to stay in Malaysia but life has its twist and turns especially in the Malaysian political context ….
So every Malaysian has a role to play to make this place aa equitable cum happening place for everyone…….
Hi Jed,
I spent some time working in England a few years back and it’s good for me to feel really being a malay without that feeling of UMNO hanging on my back. Let’s try to make this country work for everybody.
Cheers
